Polishing Laps

Faceting Laps | Flat-Lap Laps

These are lapidary polishing laps that will polish glass and gemstone. Cutting Edge Supply carries a wide variety of laps to fit everyone's needs. Make sure to check the descriptions to get exactly what you need.

Faceting laps are used on a faceting machine and are made to extreme tolerances so that facetors can control their cutting/polishing to get precise facets.

Smoothing Discs and Nova Discs are made for flat laps. These are better for cabochons, sculptures, or other projects where a precision lap is not needed

Metal polishing laps like copper and tin are used by applying a diamond slurry or compound on the top of the lap.

Questions about Polishing Laps

What is a Master Lap?

A Master Lap is used with topper laps or discs that are too thin to be used alone. Put the Master Lap on before you put on your next lap. You can find a wide range of Master Laps on our website. Use Sponge Pads when you are cutting cabs. Use these with the Hi-Tech polishing pads. Aluminum and Acrylic Master Laps are great for faceting! They provide a hard surface that will be perfectly flat which provides a precise cutting experience.

What laps do I need to polish?

In order to polish a gemstone there are usually a few steps to take. Each gemstone material is different so be sure you know what laps work on the material you are cutting. Cutting Edge Supply has great articles on what exact laps polish certain gemstones, and different tips and information on Lightning Laps. Be sure to check them out! They will answer all the questions you have about faceting gemstones.

Whats the difference between a Faceting Lap and a Cabbing Lap!

Faceting laps tend to be a very hard surface which makes it cut more precise and flat. Cabbing Laps are softer and allow you to shape stones easier. They form around the cabochon dome and will produce a better finished cabochon.

Do I need to charge my lap?

You need to charge your lap only if it is not charged when you bought it. Laps like Ceramic, Tin, Zinc, Aluminum, and Felt are ones that need to be charged before cutting. Make sure you find out what the proper paste or compound is before you apply it to the laps.

What is a Scoring Tool used for?

A scoring tool is used when you have a lap that is high-polished and you need more friction when cutting. Use it to scratch the surface lightly to make the lap cut more efficiently.
